In
order to achieve the project objectives, PIDS started its core operations that
are to conduct the trainings to the Primary School Teachers.
District Killa Abdullah, Tehsil
Chaman is a very remote area. PIDS staff had tough time in the field to arrange
the training. The staff visited the schools and conducted the surveys, in order
to find out the teachers for the training. In this regard, they met the
government officials, elected members of the community, school administration
and the teachers.
They
gave the orientation of goal & objectives of the project to these
stakeholders. After the surveys, next task was to identify the teachers. Again
the field staff conducted various meetings with the government school
administration and interviewed different teachers for selecting participants of
the training. The story does not end here but another task to start the
training was still remaining. Selection of the venue was another milestone to
achieve. The training venue was supposed to be convenient for all the teachers
to approach.
PIDS enabled to impart training to 87
Primary School Teachers of 45 Schools of District Killa Abdullah, conducting 5
training work shops from May 2004 to May 2005. For the reasons 8 training
modules got developed. Parallel, 1 training manual got developed in English and
further more is translated in Urdu and printed. This resulted as 45 Schools got
improved with academic infrastructure and with at least one teacher trained,
where 5220 students got benefited.
The target for the training was to train 80 teachers but PIDS got honored to train 87. PIDS monitoring team accompanied with the trainer was more than pleased to see the results.
All of the teachers got provided with
the Teacher Training Manuals & Audiovisual Teaching Aid Kits.
Objective
of the training emphasizes on the following areas of transferring knowledge:-
listening, communicating, writing, reading, observing and analyzing, research,
crises management challenges, creating new skills transfer part of our skills,
utilizing improved skills at your place of work and audio visual aids.
Detailed evaluation of training to the primary school teacher at the Killa Abdullah District planned and assured by the over all observation and feed back of the teachers, students and learning coordinators are very encouraging.
To
monitor the project success, frequent visits to the targeted area have been
conducted to makeup the monitoring. Evaluation
form developed and filled up by the teachers trained during the follow up to
check if they remember the contents and the concept of the training, Observation of the change of student’s
behaviors, Physical atmosphere of
the school was evaluated and suggestions were given to them to improve the
quality of education they impart.
Issues/Challenges:
The schools are very far flung, and it
is a challenge to bring 15-20 teachers at one venue for training.
One teacher school, therefore, it is also very difficult to close the school for training, therefore, the training got planned during the winter vacations. Transportation of teachers from school to training venue. Winters approached, therefore, the intense weather conditions created a lot of troubles.
Planning the training in the winter vacation, at one hand, was a smart step but on the other hand it also produced some difficulty to identify and motivate teachers to spare their time during vacations.
In
January & February due to intense winter conditions, schools remain closed
in most of the parts of Balochistan. Remaining teachers were decided to train
in up coming months of March & April 2005.
There
have some unavoidable circumstances as well as;
One of the most drought affected
areas, District Killa Abdullah, suddenly had to face the disaster due to heavy
rainfall and snow fall,
Flood hit the area very badly
Most
of the houses & schools either washed away or got damaged severely
Government was supposed to provide
the free books to schools which could not be done due to above mentioned
reasons that led in not starting the academic functions of the schools
Law and order situation is
alarming these days in the province.
Security is one of the biggest
question marks.
District Killa Abdullah is
geographically a disburse area in which the schools are at a far distance. The
linking roads are single ones which are also much damaged and in some places
even washed away due to heavy rains and snow.
Success Stories/Photos
The training from 12th
may, 2005 to 18th May,2005 held at Govt High School Pir Ali Zai, was
a great achievement because it was a co-gathering of 10 male and 10 female
participants and there has been a good deal of communication between them and a
competitive environment was also a noticeable part of this training. In the
remote and culturally bound Killa
Abdullah, this arrangement was the result of the coordination and
efforts of education department at Tehsil level and the team of PIDS.
One training of 17 teachers was
conducted with the cooperation of DEO at Mezai Adda, Killa Abdullah. Training
got planned in such a way that despite of winter vacations, intense weather
conditions and poor roads, condition teachers’ attendance and participation in
the training remained remarkable.
PIDS was able to distribute 87 Audiovisual Kits, training manuals
and Certificates to the teachers of Chaman. Though they have got observed in
the classes in order to monitor the effects of the training, yet during the
coming academic year, another monitoring visit is planned, so that the
long-term success also gets ensured.
Mr. Baz Muhammad belonging to
village Habibzai, Killa Abdullah got identified. He is former director Middle
Education and has spent a great deal of his life in education. He has been a
helping hand in the forthcoming activities as he himself is an educationist.
PIDS learned how
to deal with the Dist. Govt. official and motivate them to understand the
importance of capacity building of the primary teachers.
One training of 17 teachers was
conducted with the cooperation of DEO at Mezai Adda, Killa Abdullah. Training

Recommendations
Although the project at its goals has
been completed, yet there is an enormous requirement remains for the provision
of similar courses/training to the school teachers especially in rural areas of
the province. The teachers who have been imparted the training learnt latest
methods of teaching and management in the class or school, they have shown
their interest in attaining the courses, and simultaneously there are a many
numbers of teachers who should have provided the similar trainings to impart
quality education to build pure and strengthened nations. A standards design of
low cost mud schools should be introduced according to our local environment.
The teachers should be kept on
merit
A
regular refresher course should be designed to keep the tempo of teachers up and
strict monitoring system to be introduced.
The reasons are what so ever, the
sufferer is the CHILD. Hereby it is not
blamed any particular institution for this situation but try to suggest few low
cost options to contribute in the improvement of primary schools. The community
participation in term of following level is indispensable;
A comprehensive plan to strengthen
Primary School Teachers to full fill their responsibility.
It is there fore recommended that projects alike further more be supported.
Objectives of
the training
Equipped
school teachers with quality teaching skills,
Improved life skills of ultimate
beneficiaries
Introduced
Audiovisuals in Classrooms
The training emphasizes on the
following areas of transferring knowledge.
Listening
By sharpening
listening skills teacher will be in a position to compassionately listen to
children whether they are right or wrong.
Understanding and comprehension
This tool will
help teacher in understanding the lesson themselves and making the students
understand the lesson.
Learning
Learning is
always a two way process if a teacher has good communication skills she can be
able to involve children in a two way learning process. She will be able to
make the children learn new things and get their feed back and learn their views
about different things and lessons particularly.
Communicating
Communication
is the art and essence of TEACHING. With out this skill a teacher can become a
failure. This is the tool she also has to develop among her students for good
results not only in school but after the children start their practical life.
Writing
Writing skills
are in born skill basically but it does not mean that it can’t be acquired or
polished by guidance. Writing skills makes a teacher a perfect teacher. As the
teacher, has to impart the same among students.
Reading
exercise is the best way to impart knowledge. When a teacher reads out a lesson
it should be in a way that students take interest in it as when a story is
being told to them.
Observing and analyzing
Observing the
child or any thing related to lesson and then analyzing it is an important tool
a teacher should acquire, to achieve good results within the class room and also
to develop the same in the students.
Research
To investigate,
study and explore new techniques of learning and class control in the school.
Much innovative technique of imparting knowledge would be results could be
similarly high.
Crises management and challenges
Leadership
qualities should be present in a teacher to manage daily basis crises or
disputes if it occurs in school or conflict resolution amongst the students.
Creating new skills
Innovation is
the key to become a good teacher. Innovation might be of any type introducing
new ways in studies, games or school or class management. So creating new
skills in teachers will enhance teacher’s capacity and ultimately students.
Transfer part of our skills
Basic aim of
the teacher is to impart a part of her own skills and knowledge among the
school children for them to become a good moral citizen.
Utilizing improved skills at your place of work
After polishing
all the above mentioned attributes a teacher should try his best to impart
quality education by taking help from all the above mentioned qualities, and
give best performance.
The training Manual
The
finalized manual contains the following;
Lesson Planning
Effective and Efficient Lesson
Delivery
Time Management
Class room Management
Life Skills Education
Art and Craft for Primary School
Sound musical teaching for primary
school
Lesson Planning:
This
is the most needed training session for the primary school teachers as
generally teachers lack this skill they don’t know or don’t establish
objectives and methodology of the particular lesson. They are more interested
in making the students learn the lessons by heart.
Through this rigorous activity-based
training teachers will be enable to establish SMART objectives of there lessons
from different subjects (i.e. distinction between knowledge and skills will be
elaborated), they would be taught to formulate the interesting and challenging
methodologies to achieve certain objectives, they would be trained to plan the
relevant class and home assignments to be given to the pupil They would be
training to establish indicators for the assessment of their lessons, so that
to judge whether the objectives of the lesson are met or not.
Effective and efficient Lesson
Delivery:
During the
session teachers will be groomed to deliver their lessons according to the
lesson planners, they would be taught to use different kind of teaching aid
(audio, video, textual, physical) they would be provided with teaching aids
like dictionaries, reference books, flip charts, maps, atlases, globes, models,
and soft boards which is accessible to all (instead of using walls for placing
and mounting charts) to make their lessons effective and efficient. They will
be trained to become facilitators and coaches not the lecturers, so that the
perceived objectives are achieved accordingly. They would be trained to be:
Able to announce the
objectives of the lesson during the first session
Make all
the required teaching aid available before the lesson begins so that to be
efficient
Communicate
to the students to bring any supplementary material (easily available at low or
no cost) which would be required for the lesson
Confident
to let the teaching be a multi-way process i.e. teacher-pupil, pupil-teacher,
and pupil-pupil.
Time Management:
Teachers will undergo Time Management session so that
they would be able to effectively fulfill their responsibilities in the given
teaching hours; generally female teachers are found busy in their domestic
chores like (knitting, doing embroidery, or stitching during teaching hours
that hampers the pupil performance). This training aims to enable the teachers
to manage their time specially the teaching time to meet the required
objectives.
Classroom Management:
A
classroom management session will be carried out to train the teachers to
manage their classrooms, which are generally over crowded, have children from
different social classes, different age groups, and in some of the remote
primary schools a teacher has to accommodate students of different classes in
same class room. By the end of training session teachers will be enable to Set
the classroom code of conduct by involving students i.e. (general norms, rules
of discipline, standards of behavior, and consequences)
Environment
of the class room
Patiently
comply with standards - setting
Student/teacher
relationship
Behavior
Dress and
get up of both students and teachers
Furniture
and furnishing
Material
Communication
and conversation
No
corporal punishment, if possible
Teaching
and

Life Skills Education:
A training session on
Life Skills Education will be imparted so that the teachers would be able to
educate and equip their students to “have abilities for adaptive and
positive behavior that enable individuals to deal effectively with demands and
challenges of every day life.”
Life Skills include, (1) Self awareness, (2)
Empathy, (3) Critical thinking (4) Creative thinking (5) Decision making (6)
problem solving (7) Coping with emotions (8) Coping with stress (9)
Communication Skills and (10) interpersonal skills
Art and Craft for
primary school girls:
During this training
session teachers will be trained to impart training to conduct art and craft
classes in heir schools, teachers will be trained to use locally available
material to use in art and craft like (using waste cloths and papers to make
collage, clay to make pots, tin to make waste bins and pencil boxes, and using
threads and socks to make dolls etc)
Sound-musical teaching for primary school
girls:
Teachers
will be given skills to use sound-music aid to teach their students, audio
players and cassettes (having nursery rhymes, national songs and short stories
etc) would also be given to the teachers. This will bring diversity in the
teaching and will teaching quite effective and interesting.
