1.
Background:
The Quetta Kachi
Abadies Enviornment Programme is being implemented by a network comprising UBS Cell of
QMC mid, level NGOs, Community Based Organization ( CBOs) and Lane Organization
(LOs) with finnancial assistance from RNE,
To
effectively achieved the programme objectives, the
services of PIEDAR as Technical Advisor and M/s Forguson Assosiates (PVT)
Limited as Fund Manager have been retained under exclusive contracts with the
Royal Nitherland Embassy. PIEDAR is backstopping the forum of Implementing
Partners ( mid level NGOs and UBS Cell ) with the provision of conceptual and
techniocal resources. PIEDAR also monitors programme implementation.
M/s
Forguson Assocites are providing supportive suppervision in accounting, system,design, implementation suppervision skills, and expertise in
efficient fund management.
The duration of
assignment was two days for the gender sensitisation training and one day for
meeting with PIEDAR.
The
objectives of the meeting with PIEDAR members were :-
This training was from
Augest 28th to 29th 2001 and trainers were Ms. Farhat
Tasneem, Mr. Mansoor Abbasi and Mr. Babar Shah Khan.
A total of arround 25 participants including
10 women. The trainees
were male and female social organisers and one team leader from SEA.
2 Workshop
design and methodology
Based on meeting with
PIEDAR staff, review of the project reports and discussion of other gender
issues the workshop design was worked out. The training workshop was designed
for two days following by six sessions which were, Introduction,
aims/objectives, role of men/women together in the
society, perception of gender in the light of quotations, role of men/women in
daily life, women diversity of roles, and gender & development.
The workshop was
interactive and participatory using a variety of techniques such as group
exercises, brain storming, role play and meta cards.
For each session one reporter and one observer were selected from the trainees.
3. Aim / objectives of the training
3.1
Gender
awareness/sensitivity workshop for QKAEMP will enable trainees to:-

Increase gender awareness
and sansitisation at personal level and professional level.
·
Develop understanding of
gender dynamics with in the pakistani context.
·
Highlight the role of
women and developmen activities in the project .
4. Workshop Sessions
4.1 Introduction
Participants were divided
into pairs and provided with two cards and were asked to introduce their
training partner to the other participants. They had to inform the participants
about their names, occupations, Hobbies of their training partner. Furthermore
participants were asked to tell one quality of the first alphabet of their
names. Participants were also asked to tell about their expectations and fears
about this training. The purpose of this exercise was that trainer can understand the way of
thinking of the participants about this training.

4.2
Role of social
organiser in QKAMP
For the introduction of
QKAEMP Mr, Sohail were invited to introduced the project activities, but
according to him, participant were already informed about the project
activities, and many times he introduced their projects by giving short
presentation to the same participants.
Afterward Social Organizer from PIDS Ms Qumar was asked to give
presentation about women & development Unit’s activities and she gave brief
presentation to the participants, the purpose of W&D activities
presentation was to aware
all the staff members about W&D activities and it was observed that many
staff members of these project were not aware of the W&D Unit’s activities
which they are doing in the communities.
4.3 Defination of Gender Sensitization
All
participants have divided in to five groups and and these groups were not
gender ballanced (women’s groups were separate) and were asked to draw a
picture of a farmer, all groups Male / female have drawn a picture of men
farmers even female group did the same, no one realised that female are also a
farmer. At the end of this exercise Mr. Mansoor Abbasi sumup of this exercise and relate this
with the gender sensitization training.
For the next exercise
again participants were divided in to five groups and gaven them a cards to
write on it the defination of gender in their own perception and then Mr, Baber
Shah Khan received all definations and make one defination from these cards
which was:-

Gender is a consept that
deals with the roles and relationship between men and women women which are
determined by the social, political and economical context and not by
biological.
Ř
Gender is socially
costructed and changeable while biological sex is natural and permanent, under
normal circumstances.
After this
definition all the objectives of the training were explained to the
participants.

4.4 Men & women together on the path of life
Futher
explain the consept of gender, the group brainstormed on the words “men” &
“women”.

The men and women lable
was inter-changeed by Ms Farhat Tasneem and participants realised that except
for the reproductive role, the qualities and roles ascribed to both men and
women were inter-changeable
The classic definition of
gender was shared with the participant’s “Gender refers to men’s and women’s
role as determined by society and culture and not to their biological
differences”.
4.5
For this exercise all participants were devided in to 4 groups (in which 5 members were in each group) one observer was selected for each group and gave envelop to individual person, in that envelop there are four pices of cards in diferent shapes and participants have to make “ T “ from those cards, in one envelop all cards were present to complete the “ T” but in other four envelop cards were not complete. First 5 minutes they were not allowed to talk with eachother and next 5 minutes they were allowed to discuss with other members of the group but no one was successful to complete the “ T “ . For sumup of the exercise all observers discussed the different behaviour of the group members and then Mr. Baber Shah Khan explained that as a team member all the participants have to exchange cards and they can complete the “ T ”. Conclusion was that “ if we will work in the team then we can easly achieve our goal”.

4.6 Perception of gender in the light of
quotations
To highlight the effects
of culture on gender, different popular quotations regarding men & women
(positive and (negative) were asked from the participants and facilitator wrote
all the quotations on the charts and then facilitator de briefed participants
on how these negative or positive statements influence the way we think and
perceive society, especially gender
roles.
A cause and effect chain was developed to highlight hoe male and female stereotypes are reinforced by institutions and expressed in our society.
4.7 Review of the training
All
sessions were reviewed at the end of the day by one of the participant.
4.8 Role of men/women in daily life(group work /presentations)
Indivisual
Activity profile were made by the participants in
which they indicated their involvement in different types of work and the
amount of time they allocated to each activity.
This exercise reinforced
lessions learnt during the discussion on self awareness. Men were particularly
by the fact that women were involved in numerous tasks through out the day with
very few breaks. Men also realised that their role within the household was
limited to the economic one. No time was being spent on nurturing family
relationships.

4.9 Women Diversity of

The participants
were divided in to four groups. In each group there was a mother in law and her son and his
wife but each group had to act out a different situations:

Befor starting, the group
had to inform spectators about the location of the play, socioeconomic
conditions and charactors that were going to be played.
After the four plays,the partispents were asked to share their feelings on how
they felt inside their roles. Each family had mourned the birth of a daughter
and blamed the mother, applauded the mother who gave birth to a boy and
harassed the childless woman.mother-in-laws,in particular, were aggressive and
husbands gave way to the social pressure.

4.10 History of women & development ( WID) to gender & development (GAD)
The facilitators discussed the origen of the consept of gender and its implication for development.this involved looking at the journey of feminism through to women and development aproach right up to gender & development. Facilitators shared the history of development , particularly post world war II and the marshal plan that reconstructed most of westron Europe & Japan. The fffact that the term development is less then 50 years old explains the evolving nature and vision of development.

4.11 Inernational perceptions of gender

and distribute to the participants at the end of this trainbing to aware the
participants about the international perception of gender.
